ITHACA, N.Y. -- Chris Mooney, author of The Republican War on Science, will deliver a lecture entitled "The War on Science: What Have We Learned?" in 700 Clark Hall from 4-6 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 20. His lecture will be followed by an expert faculty panel and audience discussion. The forum is co-sponsored by the Ben and Rhoda Belnick Fund for Government Studies at Cornell.
Chris Mooney's book documents the increasingly intrusive partisan effects on the practice of science, and the serious consequences thereof. Broader issues include relationships between science and state, government and scientists, real effects of distorted knowledge or ignorance, and the inevitability of the intertwining of science and politics given the embedded nature of science in society.
Faculty Panel members include: Kurt Gottfried, Physics; Ron Herring, Government; Steve Hilgartner, Science & Technology Studies; Ted Lowi, Government; Jon Shields, University of Colorado; and Janice Thies, Crop and Soil Sciences.
This forum is part of the Provost's Series lectures, which will speak to topics of strategic importance to the university and the overarching goals of the Office of the Provost outlined and available for download at http://www.cornell.edu/provost/docs/goals_2006-07.pdf. Selections for the lecture series will be made by the Office of the Provost. For more information about the series, visit the Provost's Web site at: http://www.cornell.edu/provost.
