Blaine holds a bachelor's degree from Ohio University and he is an alumnus of Northwestern University's National High School Institute for Journalism. Prior to his current position, he was a senior science writer at the Cornell News Service and he had been a senior science writer at Radford University, Radford, Va. Blaine has worked on the night city desk at The Washington Post and has written the Post's Sky Watch column since 1986.
